Defiant deadbolt work often looks simple until the old door preparation is measured. An existing bore can be off-center, the edge hole can be worn, or the strike can sit where the bolt never reaches full extension.

Homeowners call us when a Defiant deadbolt has failed, a new door needs a separate deadbolt, or an existing keyed or keypad unit is being replaced with another compatible model. Common hardware still deserves accurate measurements.

The installation is planned around the actual door rather than the label on the box. We check backset, door thickness, bore condition, edge preparation, latch orientation, and frame alignment, then confirm that the new bolt can extend without the door being pushed or lifted.

The practical test is simple: the customer should not have to shoulder the door, lift the handle, or pull against weatherstripping just to turn the deadbolt. We use that closed-door behavior to decide whether the strike or preparation needs attention before the installation is accepted.

On a Defiant job, we inspect the condition and location of the existing holes before removing usable material. Wear around the bore, an off-center edge opening, or a strike that has been moved several times can all change what looks like a straightforward replacement.

A fresh installation is laid out from the selected deadbolt and the door structure. A retrofit uses the old preparation only when it is still sound and properly located. We then check key or keypad operation, the inside turn, and full bolt extension with the door standing naturally in the frame.

A lost key alone does not automatically require a new Defiant deadbolt. When the hardware is still serviceable, rekeying may solve the access issue. Installation is for a new physical deadbolt or a genuine hardware replacement.

That distinction also prevents a lost-key call from automatically becoming a hardware sale. When a working Defiant deadbolt can be rekeyed and the only objective is to retire old keys, the physical lock may not need to be replaced.

Have the new Defiant deadbolt available if you already bought it, including all mounting parts and keys. Send photos of the current lock area, the door edge, and the frame so we can see whether this is a replacement or a fresh installation.

If the replacement has already been purchased, keep every screw, adapter, key, and instruction with it. A straight-on photo of the door edge and a separate photo of the strike are particularly useful because those two views reveal many of the alignment issues that do not show from the front.
